WELCOME!

This website was created as a final project for the University of Michigan Environment 211 class Winter 2013. Our goal is to demonstrate using social science research the social, economic, and educational value that campus trees do provide.

We also examine what the University of Michigan can do to expand and facilitate the interaction of students with campus trees.

Below you can find information regarding the current campus tree program at the University of Michigan.

The University of Michigan earned the Tree Campus certification by:

  • Effectively managing the trees on campus
  • Developing connectivity with the community beyond campus borders and fostering healthy urban forests
  • Engaging the students in campus and community forestry efforts

The Tree Campus USA program was created to award recognition to college campuses and community leaders "for promoting healthy urban forest management and engaging the campus community in environmental stewardship."

  • U of M is actively managing more than 15,000 trees
  • Another 30,000 trees stand in various Ann Arbor woodlots
  • We have a very diverse campus forest!!
  • Our Goal is to have NO MORE than 10% of any one species of tree.
  • Currently have 110 different species on campus Maples are the most common! [8% share]

  • Student gardens ARE available
  • But we do not provide students with access to fruit tree Gardens!
  • Currently, fruit is made available to student through the dining halls
  • Fruit is supplied by 30 local Michigan farmers
